As it became clear over the course of the evening last night that Donald Trump was on track to become the 45th US president, searches related to moving to Canada spiked. These included a variety of search queries like “I want to move to Canada” and “Move to Canada.”
These majority of these types of queries were coming from blue states that had gone for Clinton, though there were some red states represented on the list as well.
Other queries that Google was seeing from some of these same people included “how to impeach a president,” “how did Trump win” and “how to move to Sweden.”
Simultaneously the Canadian immigration website went down, overwhelmed by traffic from despondent Americans seeking to learn more about moving North. The site is now back up if you’d like to learn more.
