Google announces slew of search ads and Analytics updates at SMX East

In a keynote discussion Wednesday morning, Google’s Jerry Dischler, VP of search ads, and Babak Pahlavan, senior director of product management for analytics Solutions and measurement, discussed a wide range of topics affecting search marketers and made several announcements.

The search ads news centered around audience targeting while the Analytics announcements ranged from new integrations for Tag Manager to the global release of a free version of Optimize 360.

New in Search Ads

  • Cross-device remarketing for remarketing lists for search ads (RLSA). Following on the news earlier in the week that display retargeting is now available across devices, Dischler announced that RLSA targeting can also now occur across devices. That means that if a signed-in user first visits on a mobile device, they later can be retargeted on a desktop, for example.
  • RLSA can now be set at the campaign level instead of only at the ad group level. That announcement was particularly welcomed by the audience.
  • Launch of demographic targeting for search ads. This has been in beta for some time now. Demographic targeting will be rolling out generally, allowing advertisers to target based on gender, age and household income.
  • Similar audiences for search is now in open beta. Advertisers with account managers can reach out to their reps to find out about joining that beta now.

Thousands of advertisers are now using the Store Visits metric and it is now available in 14 countries, up from 11.

Analytics news

The following updates were also detailed in a blog post Wednesday. There were four announcements.

  • A free version of Optimize 360 is launching globally. This is a version of Google’s testing and personalization product that was introduced as part of the Analytics 360 Suite in May. Optimize pairs with Google Analytics to provide a feedback loop on performance. If a test version reaches the goal thresholds set by the marketer, the test version can take over automatically.   • Data Studio, the free version of Google’s collaborative reporting tool, is now available globally. It has been available in the US since May. Additionally, Google is introducing several new reporting templates designed to make creating visual reports turnkey.
  • A new metric called session quality score will start appearing throughout Google Analytics. Powered by machine-learning, session quality score is actually the technology that has underpinned Smart Goals, which became more widely available earlier this year. Session quality score “predict[s] the likelihood of a visitor making a transaction (purchase) on your site or app”.

The four pillars of the future of SEO

SEO has come a long way from being all about on-page optimization, building backlinks and creating “relevant” content. When I read popular search engine blogs, I notice a definite trend: SEO is moving toward a more inclusive strategy that goes beyond new ways of link building or content marketing.

A huge part of present-day SEO practices is brand building and influencing search queries themselves, as opposed to starting with a truckload of keywords and creating content around them. Therefore, while links, keywords, content and site optimization remain the building blocks of SEO, the columns on which the edifice is being built are taking on a different appearance. Let’s see what these pillars are.

1. RankBrain

Although RankBrain is the third most significant ranking factor in the Google algorithm, it is perhaps the most misunderstood one. The speculations and counter-speculations never seem to end.

Since RankBrain was one of the few algorithm updates that Google first revealed to a major news publication, it has caught and held onto the attention of the general tech-reading public, in addition to search engine marketers.

I personally believe Google’s admission that they fully don’t understand RankBrain. However, this doesn’t mask the fact that they’ve made great strides in using machine learning to entrust their prized search algorithm to it.

Additionally, we do have some idea about what RankBrain does not do. According to Gary Illyes and Andrey Lipattsev of Google, RankBrain does not act on your backlink profile, content quality or click-through rate. It only helps the algorithm interpret queries better and match them with relevant page content.

And since Google can do what it does best with less human intervention, industry leaders unanimously agreed that it will gain more significance. So it was no surprise when earlier this year, Jeff Dean revealed that RankBrain now processes every single Google search (that’s at least 63,000 a second) — up from barely 15 percent nine months before.

The future has already happened here.

But you cannot do anything about it: Gary Illyes said at SMX Advanced earlier this year that there is nothing one can do to optimize a website for RankBrain.

2. Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)

In February 2016, Google integrated results from its Accelerated Mobile Pages project into its search results in the form of a “Top Stories” carousel in mobile results. Six months later, Google started displaying links to AMP pages in the main organic search results.

Today, Google has 150 million indexed AMP documents in its index, and, encouraged by mainstream adoption outside the publishing industry (including eBay and Bing), has just announced that users searching from mobile devices will be directed to the relevant AMP pages even if an equivalent app page exists.

However, the average Google user hardly knows the significance of an AMP result yet. In an informal survey conducted by Glenn Gabe, only three of 44 respondents could correctly identify what the AMP icon in the SERPs stood for. And they clearly prefer the “mobile-friendly” label over the cryptic “AMP” coupled with the lightning bolt.

This means Google’s decision is definitely in line with their aim of “bringing the mobile web on par with native apps and keeping Google relevant in the increasingly mobile-centric world we’re living in,” as we pointed out in an article on the E2M blog not long ago. AMP is here to stay (and become omnipresent), whether you like it or not.

3. The Knowledge Graph & rich answers

Google’s Knowledge Graph, which it launched in 2012, is its slow but sure attempt to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible,” in line with their mission. In a nutshell, it’s Google’s attempt at scraping — sorry, replicating — Wikipedia:

The Knowledge Graph is a knowledge base used by Google to enhance its search engine’s search results with semantic-search information gathered from a wide variety of sources.

The “wide variety of sources” includes Wikidata (to which Google moved its Freebase data and actively contributes), Wikipedia and the CIA World Factbook.

Typically, knowledge graph elements are in the form of boxes of structured information with links to authoritative sources of further information (not always, though). Common formats include the knowledge panel displayed on the right of a SERP and answer box, displayed on top of other organic results.

The number of queries that show ready answers in these formats continues to grow unabated, as ongoing studies from Stone Temple Consulting have shown. Currently, around 40 percent of Google queries display “rich answers,” which include featured snippets, but not knowledge panels:

The Knowledge Graph

Brand managers and marketers are increasingly looking to control the impression, conversation and queries that people have about them. Moving forward, one of the most effective ways to do that would be to try to influence what Google knows and has to say about you. Here are a couple of approaches from Propecta and Kapost that involve defining and connecting entities with markup, editing Wikipedia, and yes, not abandoning Google Plus.

4. Real-time, integrated penalty filters

Now you see it, now you don’t. There it is! Oh, it isn’t. Google announced that they have finally updated Penguin (after what seemed like a never-ending wait of almost two years), noting that it is for the last time.

That’s because Penguin is now a real-time signal processed within Google’s search algorithm — data on your pages is refreshed every time Google re-crawls and re-indexes them.

A few months earlier, Google also integrated Panda into their main algorithm (though unlike Penguin, it does not update in real time).

Notice a pattern here? Google wants to make spam fighting a central, automated function of serving search results.

This is a very positive sign for website owners — cleaning up spammy backlinks and getting rid of poor-quality content will bring quick results. Marketers struggling to justify extra efforts to improve the quality of their websites will now be able to put their money where their mouth is.

Conclusion

It is clear that Google will focus on machine learning, understanding of semantics, connections and patterns and user experience in the future.

SEO at the moment is very closely tied to content marketing. While Google can interpret content and derive its relevance to search queries with a very high degree of success, it is constantly focused on making refinements to improve how timely, contextual and useful this content is to the searcher. The Knowledge Graph, rich answers, RankBrain and AMP all serve this purpose, while integrated penalties maintain the quality of results.

Bing’s latest search features include a look at the stars, molecule models & virtual Rubik’s Cube

In a continued effort to offer more educational resources for students and teachers, Bing has rolled out new specialized searches in a number of areas, including constellations, molecules, royal ancestries and citations. The site has also incorporated the “World of Word” game into search results and a virtual Rubik’s Cube.

Here’s a quick hit list of the education-themed search features Bing rolled out yesterday:

Constellation searches: A query for “constellations” or a specific constellation name now returns Bing’s interactive constellation viewer at the top of the search results. Using location technology, the constellation tool will display whatever stars and constellations are currently above or below the horizon

Molecule searches: Bing has launched 2D models for any molecule query. Searches for molecules like methane (shown below), C4h2 molecule or h2o molar mass will return the interactive 2D representation of the molecules at the top of search results.

Royal Family Tree searches: Queries for specific royal families and family members – including “Queen Elizabeth II family tree” or “House of Tudor” – will return an interactive ancestry tool at the top of search results.

Citations searches: For students writing papers, Bing now has a citation tool that will list sample citation text. For example, a search for “apa citation book” will display the correct way to list a book citation according to APA standards.

Along with APA standards, Bing’s citation tool includes MLA and Chicago Manual examples for websites, books, videos and journals.

World of Words game play: Bing has added the “World of Words” interactive game to search results for word-play searches. A query like “words that start with a” or “words containing b and end with k” will surface the “World of Words” tool at the top of search results.

Rubik’s Cube solver: Bing now has a virtual Rubic’s Cube with rotate and drag functions to manipulate everyone’s favorite toy from the 80s. A search for “Rubik’s Cube solver or “Rubik’s Cube” will return the interactive Rubik’s Cube. Players can work the puzzle on their own or use Bing’s instant solver tool to see step-by-step directions to solve it.

In addition to its most recent educational tools, Bing launched a periodic table directly in search, as well as an interactive times table and geometry calculator earlier this year.

How to implement mobile-specific ad copy for AdWords expanded text ads

During the first half of 2016, one very popular search ad test was benchmarking click-through rates of ads with “no device preference” vs. “mobile preferred.” As confirmed by Google and Bing reps worldwide, the use of mobile-optimized ads increased CTRs by almost double when compared to ads with no preference that were served to users on mobile.

Not only would the SERP actually prefer these ads and serve them in higher-ranking positions, but SEMs were able to develop creative that was specific to mobile searchers. For most who tried implementing and testing mobile-specific ad copy, we saw huge success.

Speaking to your great mobile experience and letting customers know they can complete the purchase process easily from their smartphone was a great way to drive conversions. However, now that mobile preference is going the way of the dinosaur, we need to adjust our strategies.

We are moving away from device-based target settings at the ad level, toward making these adjustments at the campaign and ad group levels.

There are two options for advertisers looking to implement device-specific ad copy and associated tests. The option you select is dependent on your campaign structure and your management process preferences.

Option 1: Use device-based ad customizers

As stated in their best practices, Google recommends that you keep your bidding adjustments as broad as possible in order to reduce overhead and keep your account manageable. This is definitely a valid point, and AdWords provides some great tools to help keep your ads very relevant despite targeting multiple devices in the same campaigns/ad groups.

Ad customizers are a feature provided by AdWords that allow you to dynamically insert ad text based on certain parameters, including by device. Your two options for device customization are “Mobile” or “All” devices. See the full list of attributes.

You could theoretically insert a value for Headlines, Pathway 1, Pathway 2 or Descriptions specifically for your mobile ads. Keep two things in mind: you’ll need an ad running alongside these that doesn’t contain ad customizers, and you won’t be able to use specific content for “desktop only” or for “tablet only.”

This option is great for AdWords accounts that have built campaign structures containing similarly performing ad groups.

However, there is one big caveat here, as stated by Google:

If you notice big enough ranges in performance between ad groups within one campaign, that could even be an indication that your campaign is too broad. Some ad groups might fit better in a new campaign.

The above quotation is a very realistic challenge for many companies. Building AdWords campaign structures is divided (normally) for ease of management and standardization. Not necessarily by actual performance characteristics. Another big challenge is that ad groups may perform differently because the keywords for that associated ad group are very popular on mobile and maybe another ad group in the same campaign isn’t as mobile-focused.

This brings us to option two:

Option 2: Create mobile ad groups or campaigns

There are major benefits to creating campaigns or ad groups specifically for mobile targeting. Yes, we know, it does take some extra legwork, but the benefits are quite substantial (assuming your business prioritizes mobile experience). Using mobile-optimized ads can almost double CTRs and oftentimes make or break your funnel’s success because searchers are expecting mobile-specific results.

Benefits include:

  • the ability to easily implement and test multiple ad copy variations by device (the #1 reason);
  • seting budgets by device;
  • optimizing for device-based goals (CPA, CPC and so on);
  • enhancing your ability to segment performance data by device;
  • enhancing your ability to implement day parting by device; and
  • localizing geofencing ads to tailor their digital experience specifically to mobile.

How to implement option 2:

1. Select whether your device targeting should take place at the campaign level or ad group level.

This is very dependent on your campaign structure and management preferences. Often, SEMs are able to clone campaigns and manage device bidding at the campaign level. Some ad group structures are so large that it would be unmanageable if we did this at the ad group level.

2. Define your ad group/campaign sets that have a mobile requirement and duplicate them. Your bid strategies can be copied over from other campaigns.

Some businesses only possess certain products, verticals, geos or conversions that necessitate mobile-specific digital funnels; you will only need to implement these mobile specific structures if you really need to.

3. Adjust the ad group/campaign device bid settings.

For your original campaigns, set the mobile bid adjustment to -100%. For your new mobile campaigns, set the Desktop and Tablet bid adjustments to -100% (as shown below).

4. Write your mobile creative and set up mobile extensions.

Hyper-focused control over your mobile creative and extensions is one of the main benefits of this structure. Be sure to take full advantage. If you have a great mobile experience, speak to it.

Use phrases like:

  • Buy from your phone
  • Purchase from mobile
  • Mobile purchasing
  • Get a quote from your phone

This type of language can be the differentiator when a user is evaluating which path to take once they’ve searched. Make the user feel warm and fuzzy that your mobile experience will be easy on them.

Now that you have this mobile capability…

Google’s thoughts on increased management effort are definitely accurate. This model is not right for you unless you’re able to spend an appropriate amount of time monitoring and adjusting campaigns based on results.

What you didn’t know about recent Quality Score changes

Google is making a small change to how it reports AdWords Quality Score (QS) on October 10. While ad rank and the auction aren’t changing, advertisers using a tool or script to track QS may need to update their automations. I’ve updated Optmyzr’s (my company) free AdWords Script that calculates account-level QS to be compatible with the change in reporting, so grab a copy of that code at the end of my post.

The announced change is not a big deal, but some of the other recent AdWords changes, like Expanded Text Ads (ETAs) and device-level bid modifiers, also have an impact on QS that I haven’t seen many discussions about. So I’ll share my thoughts on what these other changes mean for QS.

October 2016 Quality Score reporting change

Google originally planned for launch of reporting of null Quality Scores on September 12, but then delayed the launch to October 10. As part of this change, Google will report a QS of null (shown as “–” in reports and the interface) when there is insufficient data for a keyword. This means that newly added keywords and low-volume keywords will no longer show a Quality Score of 6.

Starting off keywords with too little data at the average QS of 6 began during the July 2015 update. Before that, the starting QS was calculated by combining historical data from other advertisers who had used the same keyword with data about the advertiser’s historical performance. Google had assumed the new keyword would perform average compared to everyone else using the same keyword, with a positive or negative adjustment based on whether the advertiser usually had better or worse than average QS in their account.

More transparency in AdWords

While I miss the days when I could see an immediate estimate of the Quality Score for new keywords, I am still excited that new keywords will now show no QS rather than a 6. It adds back a level of transparency I’ve missed for the past year.

Rather than mixing together keywords that have earned a QS of 6 with those that don’t have enough data, now the score you see is the score you get. That means it’s easier to take action on keywords that actually need an optimization, and advertisers won’t waste time optimizing keywords that are simply waiting for more data.

To help advertisers who needed to know whether a keyword with a Quality Score of 6 was just waiting for more data, Optmyzr did a research project after the July 2015 change where we determined that after about 100 impressions, chances were high that Google knew the real QS for a keyword.

Now, we no longer need to rely on these types of approximations to determine when a keyword has a real Quality Score. When the number 1–10 appears next to a keyword, we’ll now know this is its real QS, and we can confidently act on that.

Keywords with fewer than 100 impressions have a much higher chance of changing QS than those with more than 100 impressions, leading us to believe that it usually takes Google up to 100 impressions before it has enough data to determine a keyword’s real Quality Score.

The only bad thing about this change that I can think of is that it breaks some reports and automations. So if you have automated rules or scripts that assume every keyword will have a numerical non-zero QS, you have about one week left to go and update those.

Visible Quality Score will change

It’s helpful to remember that there are many Quality Scores: the number 1–10 shown next to every keyword is called the visible Quality Score and represents a normalized average for the keyword. It’s based on performance data when the keyword matches exactly to the query on Google.com, regardless of device type.

If you’re wondering what I mean by “normalized,” Google normalizes performance data to ensure that QS is based on an apples-to-apples comparison of all competing ads. For example, they correct for differences in performance that are due to an ad’s position on the page. More on that later.

The way Google calculates visible QS is not changing in October; however, they way they report it will change for keywords without enough recent data.

Real-time Quality Score doesn’t change

Another Quality Score is the real-time Quality Score, which is used to rank and price ads every time a search happens. This score is based mostly on click-through rate (CTR) and takes into account a wide variety of signals like the time of day, day of week, location of the user, previous searches by the user, the exact phrasing of the query and so on.

When I worked at Google, we even looked into whether the lunar cycle could be a useful signal, but when we saw it didn’t correlate with CTR we scrapped that one. The real-time portion of QS is not changing on October 10.

Now let’s take a look at what some of the recent non-QS updates to AdWords have meant for QS.

You can now see your mobile Quality Score

Now that we can once again create mobile-only campaigns by setting a -100% bid adjustment for computers and tablets, you can actually see a different Quality Score number for the same keyword when it’s targeting different devices.

Up until now, the visible QS blended performance data from all devices. Now, when you replicate a keyword with its associated ads for a different device, the scores can actually differ. This  allows you to see if there are opportunities to improve QS by rewriting the ads for a particular device where the QS is weaker.

Real-time QS doesn’t change and will continue to use the device type as a signal to rank ads that perform better on a particular device, higher. In fact, real-time QS most likely already uses more granular information than just the type of device to show more relevant ads. The machine learning system should be able to see if a particular ad does better on iOS smartphones than Android smartphones and adjust the ad ranks accordingly.

Quality Score after the removal of right-hand side (RHS) ads

Another big recent change is that there are no longer text ads on the right side of the search results pages (SERPs). How has this impacted Quality Score?

There are big differences in CTR for ads shown in different locations on the SERP, so this should have a significant impact on QS. However, remember that Google normalizes the performance data to remove any impact an ad’s location has on its performance.

So this means that visible QS is not impacted by the removal of RHS ads. Google has simply updated its normalization formulas to handle the new locations that are currently available to ads.

One thing you may find interesting is that Google doesn’t only normalize for an ad’s rank (i.e., whether an ad gets position 1 or 5), but also how many other ad locations are occupied at the same time. So, for example, the normalization formula is different for an ad in position 1 when there are three ads above the organic results vs. when there are four ads at the top of the page.

My personal experience has always been that bidding aggressively for new keywords usually helps me build a good Quality Score more quickly, indicating that the normalization formulas used by AdWords are not always perfect.

Thanks to normalization, real-time QS has also not changed. However, the ad rank formula, which is what we really care about when we discuss QS, was changed as a result of the new layout of the SERPs. AdWords has thresholds for when ads are eligible to be shown above organic results, and when they went from a maximum of three top ads to four top ads, there was a change in the formula.

Ultimately, any Quality Score changes related to the new layout are beyond advertisers’ control, so the main things to pay attention to are the usual KPIs, like profitability.

Get better Quality Score with expanded text ads and new extensions

Now that we have expanded text ads (ETAs) with significantly more space to write compelling ads, plus new extensions like the price extension, how do those impact Quality Score?

Well, hopefully we’re able to use all that extra text to compel more people to click our ads, and that should lead to a better CTR (though that’s not uniformly what advertisers are experiencing).

Extensions

When it comes to ad extensions, like position, their impact on performance is normalized out of the equation. That’s the only fair way to compare all advertisers when they don’t all use the same ad extensions.

But even though extensions are not a part of the visible QS, they are part of the ad rank formula. And that makes sense considering that Google is a for-profit business. When given two ads with the same Quality Score and max CPC, but one with CTR-boosting extensions and the other not, which one do you think they’ll show?

Users, advertisers and investors alike should be happy Google ranks the ad that made itself more useful by leveraging extensions more highly.

Expanded text ads

Advertisers that are improving CTRs with ETAs may have a better chance to appear at the top of the page because they are able to beat the aforementioned top-of-page promotion threshold. Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were not eager to put ads on their search engine when they first commercialized it, but when they had to compromise, they agreed that ads should never make a page less useful.

This is still true today. This core tenet translates into the fact that ads must be at least as useful as organic results to qualify for the top of the page. In other words, if a query has low commercial intent, organic results will be more useful for users, and ads may be relegated to the bottom of the page or not even be allowed on the page at all.

Here’s a great example to illustrate that the number of ads and their location on the page remains heavily influenced by how commercial a search is. It’s not clear how commercial a search for “champagne” is, but searches for “champagne prices” and “buy champagne” are more likely to be commercial, so they feature ads more prominently.

As queries become increasingly commercial, there are progressively more ads on the SERP, as illustrated in these three searches related to “champagne” on Google.

This also illustrates another important fact about Quality Score in AdWords: QS is an absolute measurement of relevance, not a relative measurement. What I mean is that AdWords is not just trying to show the best available ads; it only wants to show good ads. If all ads are bad, they won’t show the best bad ad first.

Bing has shifted a lot more in this direction, too, but you can see that for them the bar is sometimes still a bit lower, and they show several ads at the bottom of the page for the query “champagne.”

Impact of dynamic keyword insertion (DKI) on Quality Score

Can we improve “ad text relevance,” one of the three components of AdWords QS, by using DKI or by inserting our keyword into the ad multiple times now that we have all this extra space?

The answer here is that it depends. First, it’s all about CTR, and generally ads that include the keyword will perform better because they help preserve the “scent of the query”: they make it instantly obvious to the user why the ad is relevant to them. But using the keyword too often may make the ad seem spammy or take away a chance to make other compelling arguments for why a user should visit your site over someone else’s.

As far as DKI goes specifically, Google doesn’t care whether you wrote out the ad in its entirety or used DKI. What they care about is what the ad will look like to a user, so they measure based on what users would see after DKI is handled.

Do keep in mind that DKI is a bonus feature that has to be earned. Low-quality advertisers who don’t bother to group their keywords logically into tightly themed ad groups will see their default text inserted rather than the keyword.

And while I’m on this topic, let me address a common misconception that DKI is risky because you could show some horribly offensive ad when a user does some weird query. That is in fact not true because DKI stands for “dynamic keyword insertion” and NOT “dynamic query insertion.” Google never inserts the query into the ad. It will only insert the keyword that triggered the ad to show.

Quality Score is a machine learning system

Any time AdWords makes big changes, and even when these are not related to QS, they can still impact QS. So I’m a fan of measuring and tracking it so that I can take action if things go sideways. Knowing how to boost CTR and QS also means a lower actual CPC, so the payoff can be worth the time invested.

In the end, it’s important to understand that QS is a machine learning system that uses an incredible number of signals to predict future outcomes. The more certain it is about a correlation, the more weight it will assign to a signal. So for established accounts, QS should not be a mystery, as it truly is the CTR between a keyword and its ad that make up the bulk of the Quality Score.

Unfortunately, because QS is a machine learning system, there are few absolute answers Googlers can share. If QS were a simple piece of code using some if-then clauses, any engineer could share that algorithm and tell us what would happen.

But it’s not that simple. The machine has built its own understanding of the ad auction and makes independent decisions. The best way to understand this complex system is to think logically about what it is trying to do — and that’s to show relevant, high-CTR ads that connect advertisers with customers who need their help.

Google: AMP will override app deep links for the foreseeable future

At SMX East yesterday, Adam Greenberg, the Global Product Partnerships at Google gave a talk about AMP. He said during the question and answer time that AMP pages will override app deep links for the “foreseeable future.”

Last week we covered how that when Google began rolling out AMP to the core mobile results that Google quietly added to their changelog that AMP pages will trump app deep links. In short that means when a user installed an app of a publisher, does a search on their mobile phone where the app resides, clicks on a link within the Google mobile results that could lead to the app opening up, instead, Google will show the AMP page – not the content within the app the user installed.

Google made several large pushes with App Indexing throughout the years. These were incentives to get developers to add deep links and App Indexing to their apps. Such as installing apps from the mobile results, app indexing support for iOS apps, a ranking boost for deploying app indexing, Google Search Console reporting and so much more.

But now, if you are a website that has both deployed app indexing and AMP, your app indexing won’t be doing much for you to drive more visits to your native iOS or Android app.

Google told us they “have found that AMP helps us deliver” on a better user experience “because it is consistently fast and reliable.” Google added “AMP uses 10x less data than a non AMP page.” Google told us that “people really like AMP” and they are “more likely to click on a result when it’s presented in AMP format versus non AMP.”

Google also told us that they “support both approaches” but “With AMP — and the ability to deliver a result on Google Search in a median time of less than a second — we know we can provide that reliable and consistently fast experience.”

Personally, as a publisher that has deployed virtually everything Google has asked developers to deploy. From specialized Google Custom Search features, to authorship, app indexing, AMP, mobile friendly, HTTPS and way more – this is a bit discouraging to say the least.

I think if a user is has downloaded the app, keeps the app on their device, consumes content within the app – that the user would have a preference to seeing the content within the publishers app versus on a lightweight AMP page. But Google clearly disagrees with my personal opinion on this matter.
