Don’t let your business play possum with local search

For brick-and-mortar businesses, proximity to the searcher’s location has become even more important as a ranking signal thanks to a Google algorithm update nicknamed Possum. With the Possum algorithm change, Google is continuing down a path it has been traveling for quite some time, which is the merging of local and organic ranking signals.

Google is now applying filters to reward certain businesses that are not only physically closest to searchers but that also are optimizing their location data and content for search far better than anyone else. To understand the impact of Possum crawling into our lives, let’s look at the following scenario:

  • Before Possum: Let’s say Jim, a resident of San Mateo, California, requires orthopedic surgery and is doing a search for orthopedic specialists in the area. An area hospital, Hospital A, that publishes location pages for dozens of orthopedic surgeons might dominate the local pack results — not necessarily because Hospital A optimizes its content better than anyone else, but because it is the largest hospital in the area and has enough domain strength to make those pages relevant from an algorithmic standpoint.
  • After Possum: Jim conducts the same search for orthopedic specialists. Instead of a single hospital dominating search results, Google allocates more real estate to other hospitals nearby based on their location and the usual ranking signals — unless Hospital A’s content and data are so well optimized for search that they outperform other hospitals by a wide margin.

What Google is doing here is not new to search. For some time, Google has been making it harder for monster brands such as Amazon to dominate search results for product searches simply because of their size and prominence.

The Amazons and Walmarts of the world no longer dominate the top search results like they once did unless their search signals outperform competitors’ content by a wide margin. With Possum, Google is applying to local search a similar filter it has been using for organic search more generally.

Greater competition with your neighbors

Possum also affects local results in a more arcane, but important, way. As Joy Hawkins discussed in a recent Search Engine Land column, the algorithm is affecting search results for similar businesses that are clustered closely together, examples being:

  • Two or more retailers, such as mattress stores or restaurants, located across the street from each other or in the same strip mall.
  • Professionals, such as attorneys, insurance agents or accountants, who might share the same office space.

Before Possum, an unbranded search for, say, Greek restaurants in Chicago might yield the names of several Greek dining establishments clustered closely together in Chicago’s Greektown area. Such a result would make perfect sense if the person doing the search were located a block away from Greektown, which is located on the city’s near west side.

But what if the searcher were located in the north or south suburbs and wanted to find Greek restaurants in Chicago? Getting the names of a bunch of Greektown restaurants might not be a very good user experience if the searcher wanted to find locations closer to their physical location.

Possum has made it less likely that similar businesses clustered together will dominate location-based searches unless, as noted, the searcher is conducting the search close to the actual location of those businesses.

One implication of this, as local search expert Andrew Shotland uncovered, is that national to local brands may see positive shifts in rankings due to brand authority being turned up as a signal in the ranking algorithm.

Possum has a number of other implications for businesses, as Hawkins details in her article. But for brick-and-mortar businesses that rely on local foot traffic, the impacts I have described are especially important. As Hawkins wrote, “The physical location of the searcher is more important than it was before.”

How to beat the competition

If you are a business that operates brick-and-mortar locations, you should first check to see if your rankings for local search have been affected. You might not have been affected — or you might be seeing better results, not necessarily a drop in rankings.

Regardless of whether you’ve been affected, now is the time to get more rigorous about how you manage your data and content as assets to make your brand more visible where people conduct near-me searches. Ask questions like:

  • Is my data accurate and shared properly with the publishers and aggregators that distribute my data?
  • Are my data and content differentiated to make my brand stand out? Am I listing data attributes, such as the availability of free parking, which might differentiate me when near-me searches occur? Is my deep content, such as long-form description of my business, or visual imagery, optimized properly for search?

Now, more than ever, it’s time to boost your signal for local search to be found. Don’t let your business play possum with local search.

WordPress.com adds “advanced” SEO tools and it’ll make you smile

You’ve heard that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To that cliché we can add another: Advanced SEO is in the eye of the beholder, too.

WordPress.com announced Monday a small set of what it’s calling “Advanced SEO Tools” and if you’ve been doing SEO for even a little while now, it should make you smile. It’s a trio of tools that includes

  • the ability to write custom meta descriptions for blog posts
  • the ability to write custom title elements for different pages, such as having some page titles formatted as Post Title | Site Name and other page titles formatted as Site Name | Tagline
  • a preview tool that shows how a URL will look in Google’s search results, or when shared on social networks like Facebook and Twitter

If you’re a WordPress.org user — i.e., you run WordPress as your content management system for a self-hosted website — these are basic tools offering functionality that can be found via almost any popular SEO plugin. But these tools are built for WordPress.com Business Plan users, a group that likely consists of small business owners and others who’ve never had a website before and have little understanding of what SEO is all about.

So don’t laugh at what WordPress.com calls “advanced” SEO tools. Instead, just smile about it and be reminded that what’s basic to most SEOs is still advanced to a lot of everybody else.

Allstate: offline call data improved SEM performance and the customer experience

Call tracking, now generally rebranded as “call intelligence” or “call analytics,” went from being a novelty in the SEM world a few years ago to a perceived commodity today. However the benefits of using call analytics extend well beyond campaign optimization into operational and customer experience improvements for brands and marketers.

Allstate offers a case study, which was presented last week at SMX East. The company worked with Invoca on a paid-search campaign specifically for local insurance agents in multiple provinces in Canada, including French-speaking Quebec.

As a basic matter, call data provides insight into what’s happening “offline.” As I’ve written multiple times before, this is now critical for all digital marketers (whether search or display).

Using DoubleClick for search and Invoca, Allstate was able to combine click and call data for improved bidding and targeting. Allstate was able to identify the keywords that generated calls and then analyzed which of those calls generated quotes and later sales and thus significantly refine its keyword bidding.

Allstate was also able to improve local agent productivity by using Invoca’s technology to block unwanted telemarketing in-bound spam calls to agents — a kind of mirror of the online click fraud problem. It also obtained considerable audience data based on the location of calls.

The company found that most online quote requests came from the PC, while the majority of calls were coming from mobile phones, which offered better leads. Allstate reported the following campaign results:

  • A 16 percent increase in calls year over year
  • A more than 50 percent decrease in abandoned calls
  • Decreased customer acquisition costs

Rather than optimizing against clicks and using lead-capture forms to determine efficacy, Allstate was able to optimize against real ROI metrics, using call analytics. Perhaps most interesting, however, was how Allstate moved beyond campaign optimization and was able to use call data to improve the customer experience — and thus close more leads.

Allstate discovered that its previous IVR menu, which ran in excess of 60 seconds, was causing people to drop off. The company shortened the IVR message for paid-search callers and improved call routing. Accordingly, it captured more high-intent leads.

It was also able to do a better job, using location data, to route calls to local agents and to the correct default language. Overall the call experience was improved and the company was able to close more sales.

3 mysterious and scary ways AdWords budget creep can happen to you

It’s almost Halloween, and what could be scarier than wasted ad spend?

Even the most experienced PPC managers can be mystified when a paid search account experiences a sudden surge in ad spend. And unless you have very strict budget settings, this can happen from time to time.

While most of the time, a quick surge in ad spend is easily identifiable and is accompanied by an increase in leads or sales, what’s really scary is budget creep — a very slow and rising boost in ad spend that may not be detectable to the naked eye.

When that happens, and when the business is looking to cut a few dollars in ad spend, it’s time to catch the mysterious culprit behind the case of the disappearing AdWords budget.

The most obvious first step is to check search queries. If the search queries look OK, we need to dig deeper, and here are some options.

Mystery No. 1 solved: location targeting

Review the locations the clicks are actually coming from. In the image below, this client does business in the US only, and while we’re not seeing a huge waste in ad spend from other countries, over time, it can be significant.

When we dug in, we saw the location settings were targeted to “People in, searching for, or who show interest in my targeted location.”

So, we’d want to modify the settings to match the logical business need or exclude locations that are costing a significant amount of ad spend.

The “People in, searching for, or who show interest in my targeted location” works well for various reasons. For example, if you were in Massachusetts and needed a hotel room in Las Vegas, you’d search for “hotel in Las Vegas,” and you should see Las Vegas-based hotel ads.

However, the “people in my targeted location” setting will target only those physically in my location. This is a great setting if you are certain that you only want your ads to show in that specific location and there isn’t a scenario where people outside of that location will search for your products or services.

Mystery No. 2 solved: ad scheduling

Sometimes budget creep can happen via the ad delivery schedule. First, ask yourself if the advertiser is in a sector that needs to have live PPC campaigns 24/7.

One of our clients can spend up to $1,500 per weekday and as little as $100 per day on the weekends. When the client wanted to buckle down on budget, we first reviewed the quality of leads that came in on the weekends and realized that usually, they were not very good.

However, it’s possible that this client’s target market will sometimes work on weekends, so we didn’t shut ad live time down completely. Instead, we lowered bids by 50 percent on Saturdays and Sundays and were able to save a little money while still bringing in leads.

As with everything, test it out. I love to start with the 24/7 scheduling option even for B2Bs, because the idea is that if there is no demand, no one will search and click. However, when you’re looking to cut wasted ad spend, this a place to do it.

Mystery No. 3 solved: position metrics

I’ve never loved the average position metric, because if you’re seeing an average No. 2 position, that means sometimes you’re in No. 1, and sometimes you’re in No. 3 or No. 4, so it’s a tricky one.

But if you’re looking to solve the mystery of budget creep, you can look at device targeting and average position and modify those based on business needs.

For example, if you’re a mobile-heavy business and get most of your sales from mobile, you may want to focus more on the average position per device, looking at the cost per click for the devices that matter most.

If your overall max bid for the ad group was, say, $2.41, as in the image above, but the business wanted to lower the overall cost per click and be Position 1 in mobile (but didn’t care about the other devices as much), you could modify device bids separately.

Side note: It was announced in July that advertisers can now modify the tablet device separately, too. So keep that in mind.

At the end of the day, budget creep can happen and can definitely give you a spooky feeling. But spending a little time in your location targeting, ad scheduling and device bidding in AdWords can usually solve those mysteries and help keep the ad spend transparent for everyone.

How mobile has changed the way we search, based on 10+ years of eye-tracking studies

Chris Pinkerton, the vice president of business development at Mediative, has been tracking the ways viewers look at the Google search engine results page (SERP) since 2003. In that time, Mediative’s eye-tracking studies have revealed major shifts in the way users consume the SERP.

At SMX East 2016, he explored the ways the proliferation of mobile devices have deeply impacted user search behavior on both mobile and desktop searches.

Pinkerton asserts that search activity, psychologically speaking, is mindless activity. It’s mindless because of the habits that form with the devices we use.

Habits are a very powerful thing to start to understand. Developing a habit of consuming information on a desktop in a certain way changes the way you consume content.

Looking back at 2003, Google became the dominant search engine because it drove people to find information faster than its competitors. That created habitual behavior — people found content the fastest on Google and kept coming back.

(As an aside, Bing has implemented programs to pay people for their search behavior in an attempt to break these deeply ingrained habits and introduce a new behavior.)

In 2005, there was a Golden Triangle pattern when it came to eyeballs on the Google SERP. But in 2016, this pattern is vastly different (see below), due in large part to mobile. It’s changed the way people consume the SERP and the speed at which they consume it. Users spot-scan and find what is contextually relevant for them.pinkerton-1

Mobile devices have habitually conditioned searchers to scan vertically more than horizontally. This has translated to desktop search as well. People are viewing more search listings during a single session but are spending less time viewing each one.

Users are looking the front end of search listings, so make sure your main message comes first. While it used to take a user 2.6 seconds to consume a SERP, that time has been cut in half, to 1.3 seconds, Pinkerton said.

Regardless of mobile’s impact, the No. 1 organic listing captures the most click activity, regardless of what new elements are presented. However, it takes 87 percent longer for the No. 1 organic listing to be first seen on a mobile device vs. desktop, he said.

  • With a Knowledge Graph panel on the SERP, almost 22 percent fewer clicks went to the top No. 1 organic listing.
  • 93% of searchers look at the Knowledge Graph panel.
  • 49% of searchers click on the Knowledge Graph panel.

Local listings and map

  • 47% more clicks on the map and local listing occur when positioned above the organic listings.
  • 10% of clicks on local listing on average.
  • 51% more searchers view the local listings and map when positioned above the organic listings.

Star ratings

  • Listings with star ratings capture 24% of page clicks on average.

Sponsored listings

  • Top sponsored listings are viewed after 0.36 seconds on average.
  • 2% of clicks on the top two sponsored listings on mobile vs. 14.5% on desktop.
  • The top organic listing gets 10% fewer clicks when three sponsored listings are present vs. one sponsored listing.

Organic listings

  • Top organic listings capture the most search activity (33.2%).
  • 5% of searchers on average look at the top organic listing.
  • 57% of clicks go to the top four organic listings on average.
  • Only 7.4% of the clicks that occur are below the fourth organic listing on mobile vs. 16% on desktop.

Google opens the AMP fire hose

Google’s expansion of Accelerated Mobile Pages across mobile search results is underway, gradually turning the trickle of AMP traffic to a steady flow.

The September start of the “blue links” rollout, along with announcements from some high-profile participants in the AMP Project, are advancing the open-source initiative on multiple fronts.

Since Accelerated Mobile Pages first appeared in Google search results in February 2016, AMPs have been mostly concentrated in the Top Stories area of mobile search results:

The current expansion, which was announced in August and started in mid-September, will surface AMPs throughout standard mobile search results, aka “blue links.” When the phased blue links rollout is complete, Google will always present the validated AMP version of a page to mobile users instead of the standard web link.

At this stage, Google is only surfacing a portion of available AMPs; a September 25 query returned a mixture of AMP and non-AMP results in the blue links area. When the expansion is complete, all available AMPs will be displayed.

Along with the blue links rollout, Google made slight modifications to its AMP viewer. The user interface is now grey instead of blue and employs an “X” button instead of a back arrow to close the viewer and return to search results.

Broader, deeper AMP exposure

For news publishers, the blue links expansion will surface evergreen and long-tail content that wouldn’t have been eligible for the Top Stories area but accounts for a large portion of search traffic.

It also opens AMP exposure to commercial, vertical and non-news publishers. Essentially, any AMP-enabled content that would normally surface in search will be presented to users.

A diverse group of non-news publishers timed their own announcements to Google’s blue links rollout. On September 20, eBay announced that its AMP-enabled product pages were live after a few months of development work to resolve some feature gaps.

On the same day, Shopify announced plans to AMP-enable its merchants and Reddit announced the launch of tens of millions of AMP pages on its platform. These companies join Fandango, Food Network and other non-news publishers on AMP.  There’s plenty of content to fill the fire hose.

AMP benefits in Google search

Google has stated repeatedly that AMP is not a ranking factor (at least not yet), but that doesn’t mean AMP content won’t get special treatment.

Most noticeably, Google has been building user experiences to showcase AMPs above standard search results. The “Top Stories” carousel was the first example — and now Google is working on a “Live Coverage” AMP carousel for breaking news, elections, sports and other real-time events.

These modules dominate the top of the mobile viewport, above standard results where non-AMP links appear. It’s easy to imagine a variety of special AMP-based user experiences for all types of informational and commercial content.

In addition, Google has signaled that load time in general will matter in its ranking algorithm going forward — and has contributed to the growing mountain of research establishing load time as a predictor of user satisfaction and engagement. With Google’s data showing an average mobile page load time of 19 seconds and a 53-percent abandonment rate after three seconds of waiting, lightning-fast AMPs should ace any speed-related SEO tests.

Finally, users could begin to reward AMP publishers by favoring AMPs in search results. If users begin to recognize the AMP icon and associate it with a fast page, they may start choosing AMP links (or avoiding non-AMP links) in search results for certain types of content and queries.

Over time, such preferences could manifest in changes to search performance. (In early September, Google was observed testing a darker, more noticeable AMP icon.)

Combined, all of these factors could provide advantages to AMP-enabled publishers over non-AMPed publishers, even if the ranking algorithm for general Google search results doesn’t explicitly favor AMP.

AMP beyond Google

Apart from Google’s use of AMP, new participants are bringing the broader potential of the open-source AMP Project into view.

The eBay and Reddit announcements cited speed and performance as primary reasons for adopting AMP — and opened the door to future AMP-only strategies.

AMP pages look great and load fast on desktop just like they do on mobile. Maintaining good performance to pages as they change often amounts to a time consuming game of Whac[k]-A-Mole but we can be confident our AMP pages will always be fast. So, for many kinds of pages, we think the AMP version is the only version we’ll ever need.

Although both of them [AMP and non-AMP browse pages] are highly optimized, look the same, and share most of the code, updating both versions is still a maintenance overhead. In addition, we always need to watch out for feature parity. In the future, based on how AMP pages are performing, we may choose to have one mobile version (AMP) and serve it to all platforms.

The expansion of AMP to desktop experiences and the potential for AMP to replace standard web pages have been anticipated by the AMP Project from the start — but these are among the first large publishers to talk publicly about it.

A few days later, Bing announced AMP support in its search app for iOS and Android in order to provide a better, more consistent user experience. Like Google, Bing will link to the AMP version of a page when available.

This is something any search engine, social platform or other referrer could do — every standard web page with an AMP counterpart has a header tag pointing to the AMP version. Social news aggregator Nuzzel has been linking to AMPs for some time, and Twitter has taken initial steps to link to AMP in certain contexts.

Google’s promotion of AMP across its products is generating awareness, providing incentives for publisher adoption and driving feature development and innovation.

At the same time, the involvement of diverse participants and non-Google-dependent use cases will be critical to AMP’s long-term success and its mission to improve performance across the mobile web — not just a corner of it. The AMP format was seeded in Google’s environment but was never meant to stay there.
